Guadalupe Mejia Obituary
Guadalupe Mejia (maiden name Guadalupe Guerrero Figueroa), 96, of Sacramento, California passed away on March 23, 2024
Guadalupe was born on May 10, 1927, in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico to Ignacio Guerrero and Pascuala Figueroa. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings: Adela, Jesus, Jose, and Antonio. She has 2 surviving siblings Patrocinia (Tencha), and Francisco.
Guadalupe has 7 surviving children, Juan (Johnny), Rosalia, Francisco (Frank), Hortencia, Jose (Joe), Yolanda, and Isabel. She is predeceased by 2 of her children, Santiago (Junior) and Alejandro (Alex). She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Guadalupe had always been ambitious and strived to improve her lifestyle and living conditions. She started working at a very early age to help her mother and siblings to make ends meet. The family eventually move to Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico where she would cross the U.S border to work in El Paso as a housemaid. She became a U.S permanent resident in the late 1940s and on July 8, 1998, she became a US Naturalized Citizen.
Guadalupe married Santiago Felipe Mejia on February 29, 1952, in El Paso, Texas who passed away on November 16, 1984, in Sacramento. She separated from him in the mid-1960s, and she continued raising her children on her own.
Guadalupe always worked hard as a mother making big meals for her children, cleaning, and sewing. She used her sewing skills to make some clothes for the children when they were very young. We were raised in El Paso, Texas and lived the longest in Ysleta. She worked many years at the Ysleta Mission (historic Catholic church) as a cook for the resident priests. Although we lived in humble conditions, it did not seem like it because she provided everything for our existence.
Guadalupe, as a single parent, bought her first house in Ysleta in 1970. We moved to Sacramento in 1971 in search of a better life and to work. In 1977, she bought her second house in Sacramento, where she lived for 47 years until her death.
Guadalupe was a faithful Christian and believed in the power of praying.
Guadalupe’s children have become successful due to her beliefs, example, motivation and inspiration. She is loved and will be missed by all her children and grandchildren.
Special recognition and appreciation to Rosalia, Hortencia and Juan for doing difficult tasks in caring for their mother for many years before her passing.
Written by her son Juan Mejia (3/26/2024)
