I work for an organization that is dedicated to the sanctity of the Salish Sea and the life it contains, including the Southern Resident killer whales. For years, our big project was working to bring the Southern Resident killer whale Lolita (Tokitae / Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut) out of captivity at Miami Seaquarium and back home to the Salish Sea. Susan and I had many phone conversations about Lolita and this work. Susan was passionate about Lolita, and put her passion and generosity into action, creating a GoFundMe for the work that we were doing. There was something about Lolita's story of hardship and her resilience, her sweetness, her happy and loving heart, that moved many people all around the world. Lolita had a way of bringing all kinds of people -- activists, scientists, artists, Native tribes, corporations, government agencies, philanthropists, and even people in the captive industry -- to work together in a good way. We all came very close to bringing Lolita home. But just as everything was coming together, just as people were all working together in a good way, Lolita unexpectedly passed away. I was sad to hear that Susan unexpectedly passed away not long after Lolita did. Two beautiful souls that were clearly spiritually connected. May their lives lived inspire us all to work for love, to be generous and kind to one another and to all living creatures. May their memories be for a blessing.

Susan has been my friend since we took the Introduction Leaders Program together in 2020. Her love of people, animals and stand for transformation truly inspired me. I heard from her about a month before she passed as we tried to speak every few months. My sincere condolences to your family. She will be greatly missed.

I participated with Susan in transformational seminars and got to know her, and her love of animals. Susan’s knowledge, care and curiosity inspired me to learn more about my beloved pets. I will always remember Susan’s warm and generous spirit. Rest in Peace, Susan.

My name is Shunattee' Lewis, I worked with Susan Bonta since 2008 here at 1725 28th St. Every time I ran into sue we always had something to talk about and she always kept a smile on her face. Sue loved her kittens, poetry, taking care of people in need and volunteering. She would call me often to check on me especially during the Covid almost every day. She would invite me to her special gatherings. Sue is family. I gave sue a plant 6 years ago and she still has it. We call it the Alien Plant because it only grew one flower. I love her and a piece of my heart will always be filled with my sue.
I love you and miss you!

My deepest Condolences to the family. Susan was a unique person w/ many talents most would not even know. I met Susan back in the 90's when I was a Temporary County Employee and we always said hello and would talk for a few minutes either at the Coffee Bar in the break room or the bathroom. She was always a nice person and always had a smile on her face when we saw one another. She will definitely be missed.

When I think of Susan, I think of kindness, caring, passion and determination. Many days when I was walking from the garage to our work building on 28th Street, I would often see Susan walking to work loaded down with all of her packages and bags. Later, I came to learn that Susan was very active in her community and a dedicated volunteer to wonderful causes. After 5:00 Susan would leave her County job dive right into her second job, her passion; community work and volunteering. Susan was very dedicated to her County Job as well and served her customers with great care and excellent customer service. Susan will be missed but never forgotten. My prayers go out to the family, may the Good Lord comfort you during this most difficult time. Please know that Susan made a magnificent mark in this world and made it a better place to live. Her light will never be dimmed. RIP Susan.

Sending my prayers and condolences to the Bonta family. I was her supervisor from 7/2018-2/2020. During that time, I got a chance to know Susan on a personal level. We were both poets and both wrote poetry books. We swapped books with each other. Susan was a very kind, intelligent, creative and active person. She really amazed me with all of the things she was involved in. I often told her that I wish I had her energy. She was taking belly dancing classes taught by her friend Jodette. Susan volunteered in the children's section at the Crocker Art Museum, she read her poetry at events downtown, she helped feed the homeless at Cesar Chavez Park with her friend Sister Elizabeth's church. Susan loved helping out customers who called the General Information Line. Susan had a great voice and did voice over work for the Society of the Blind and other places. Susan was passionate about a whale named Lolita that she was trying to get reunited with the mother whale. Susan also was an advocate for a clean earth.
I last spoke to Susan in May of this year when she interviewed me for a project she was working on for the Landmark group she was active in. Susan will be dearly missed. Rest in peace Susan.
